Things You Should Know About Organic Food

organic food

Organic foods have gained popularity in most supermarkets and health food stores because of the fatal risk of chemical residues that are present in our daily food. If you were to choose between two apples, one is conventional raised and the other is organically raised, which would you likely to choose? But before giving your quick decision let us be more aware of some informative details below:

What do you mean by organic farming?

Organic farming actually refers to how the vegetables and fruits are being raised and grown. The sole practice alone will enhance the fertility of the soil and reduce pollution. It is promoted for a safe and healthy food for every family table. This means that there are no pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers that are being added to the soil to control the pest and improve the growth. Usually, in organic farming, the fertilization process solely depends on compost and manure for boosting the quality of the soil. For livestock, the farmers feed the animals with organic food and do not use vaccinations and other antibiotics in raising them and products with USDA certification seal is certified to be organic.

Are 'natural foods' the same with 'organic foods'?

Though many get confused about natural and organic terms, these two labels of food are not the same. In natural foods, it means that the food does not contain artificial flavoring, preservative, and artificial colors to enhance its taste and appearance while organic food means the way the product or goods being raised or produce.

Does It Means Organic Foods Are More Nutritious And Safer To Eat?

There are many proven studies that pointed out that eating organic food really benefits us because of the absence of the chemical residue that we often eat with together with the food in conventionally grown and raised food. In addition to that, one can get more nutrients from organic foods they ate which also proven to have high anti-oxidant elements. Organic foods do not also contain metallic compounds such as the toxic metal like cadmium that plants and vegetables sip on its roots. Livestock animals that are raised organically need clean environment too to sustain their life because they are not treated with antibiotics. However, most organic foods are expensive due to the costly farming process and practices.

To save in buying organic foods such as fruits and vegetables, you may check out the following tips below:

1. Shop around before you buy.
2. Know where there are sales in the organic market.
3. Buy fruits and vegetables that are in season.
4. Ask and be informed about the labels of the product.
5. Buy from the local farmers in your neighborhood.

In addition to that, we would like to share some things we observed from our fellow friends when they eat their fruit, which is washing, peeling or scrubbing it off. We can say that washing is really recommended before you eat any foods as it will remove the dirt and bacteria, however, the chemical residue may not be removed by simple washing alone. Peeling, on the other hand, will get rid of the contaminants but the result is lessening the nutrients of the food you eat. By that, we hope that we were able to contribute some enlightenment and awareness about the food we eat.
